Bridging Borders Through Service: ICAND’s Caribbean Study Abroad Experience

St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, over Spring Break 2025, a dynamic group of students embarked on a life-changing journey to St. Croix as part of the I Can Do Caribbean Social Work (ICANDCSW) INC. Study Abroad Experience. Led by Dr. Enchante’ Franklin, Executive Director of Operations, this immersive program blended service, education, cultural exchange, and wellness, giving participants the opportunity to engage with local communities, learn from inspiring mentors, and experience the rich culture of the Virgin Islands.

Service and Education: A Hands-On Experience

Students spent time at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), where they participated in a Lunch & Learn session led by Antionette Mutcherson, owner of BFF Publishing House and book coach who traveled with the group from the U.S. She shared valuable insights on entrepreneurship, authorship, and personal development, inspiring students to take control of their futures.

Another highlight was the visit to a local elementary school, where students donated school supplies, participated in classroom activities, and even taught lessons. Engaging with young learners firsthand allowed participants to make a tangible impact while deepening their appreciation for service and education in an international setting.

Cultural Immersion and Special Moments

A major highlight of the trip was an African naming ceremony, where each student received a unique African name, connecting them to the rich heritage of the African diaspora. This emotional and symbolic moment left a lasting impression, reinforcing the program’s deep cultural significance.

Mindfulness & Wellness

Mental and emotional wellness played a key role in the experience, thanks to a powerful mindfulness session led by Miss LaCresha Cunningham, a PhD student and wellness coach. Miss Cree guided participants through relaxation techniques, self-reflection exercises, and discussions on mental health, ensuring that students left with tools to support their overall well-being.

Chitchat with Aunti Pattipat: A Spotlight on Service Learning

The impact of the program reached even further when Dr. Franklin and the students were featured on St. Croix’s popular radio show, CHITCHAT WITH AUNTI PATTIPAT. They shared reflections on their service work, cultural experiences, and the importance of study abroad programs in shaping future leaders.

Speaking passionately about the ICANDCSW initiative, Dr. Franklin highlighted how structured service-learning programs empower students, uplift communities, and create sustainable change across the globe. “Service learning is more than volunteering; it’s an intentional, immersive approach that fosters mutual growth between students and the communities they serve,” Dr. Franklin shared during the interview.

She also discussed ICAND’s mission to integrate academic learning with hands-on service, emphasizing the program’s impact in Ghana, Malaysia, Tanzania, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The conversation was an inspiring reflection and a call to action, encouraging students, educators, and professionals to explore service learning as a pathway to leadership, empathy, and sustainable impact.

Meet the Participants & Team

This inspiring group of students included Miss Jayda Winder, Miss Khoriana Wyatt, Miss Regan Leak, and many others, each of whom embraced the experience with enthusiasm and an open heart. They were supported by Team Nurse Rose “Rudy” Cain and Collette Craig, who ensured their well-being throughout the journey.
